At first it was difficult for me to connect the title of the book to the actual text itself,
why would the author choose to title the book The Age of Earthquakes. It wasn’t until I got around the
middle of the book that it dawned upon me that the author uses physical earthquakes to represent a
realization that shakes the foundation of this generation’s perception of our surroundings. Technology
has consumed every part of our lives that our lives revolve around it, once we realize the damaging
effects in the bigger picture it changes how we see technology. This is the age of earthquakes because
many of our societal foundations will eventually collapse as technology moves us further and further
away from what it means to be human. Humans need social interactions face to face, and in the past
much of our value was dependent on the people around us. People are hiding behind their computer
screens and creating a fake reality in which they can control how people perceive them even though it
may be the furthest thing from the truth. People are striving now more than effort to look perfect by
putting on a fake smile and posting it, this circulation of perfection and beauty is most influenced by
celebrities, everyone has to look and act like them. Even the way people are functioning as evolved,
it is linear and often repetitive. Our attention spans are shorter and now children are only looking for
immediate answers and satisfaction. This constant cycle has led to more stress and depression that
old values like family are now meaningless. Everyone having dinner around a table laughing and
talking about everyone’s day now is some old time fairy tale that no longer exists.
