Hiding in a fake and addicting world

Written Response:
One thing I noticed about The Age of Earthquakes is that it comments on the current generation and their use of technology. The novel uses technology to explain the things we can not necessarily explain. For example, addiction, loneliness, intelligence, memory patterns, and many more topics are discussed and explained with reference to technology. The references to technology were interesting because they were a new and modern look to these ancient ideas. Most of the ideas presented seem very logical and make sense in terms of our current society. The book was relevant and modern because of some of the topics discussed such as people creating fake identities on social media and how technology has let people hide from the rest of the world. These subjects were presented in a modern way which was different from a typical book format. The use of images and graphics were used which helped better develop the ideas and personally I thought was a good touch by the author because it makes reading more appealing. I also enjoyed how the “text type” was as if someone was on the internet and reading various ads and articles. That aspect was extremely effective because it helped express the actual topics being talked about through different formatting. The one issue with this internet format/text type is that it was hard to follow because there was no plot and no characters, it was more informational and commentary on technology. Overall, I thought the text was extremely interesting and helped open my mind to new ideas concerning the effects of technology.

  1. I agree with your written response, Brooke, especially how technology allows us to hide anonymously from the world with fake identities and catfishes and such. However, it also had led to people oversharing about their lives and people can go on other peoples social media and find out everything. The whole book was pretty confusing and every scenario and its opposite was true, which is just a reflection upon how technology is so diverse. I also really like your pastiche, phones are really addictive.
