The Age of Earthquakes: A Guide to the Extreme Present, is made up of many alternating themes and messages that contribute to an overarching idea of technological advances and their effects on humanity. I noticed first that the book was about technological effects on humanity. It was not what I expected as I judged the book by its title expecting it to be about ,ofcourse, earthquakes. I also noticed and found interesting, that the book incorporated pages that include little to no words which allows for the reader to come up with their own opinions as the book doesn’t provide clear answers it provides context and evidence for the reader to draw their own conclusions. Another thing that I found interesting was that the book often jumped from one idea to another without a very smooth transition, although it was interesting it made the read a bit confusing as I had to be attentive to every sentence read in order to grasp the entirety of the message conveyed throughout the book. The ending of this book was also very confusing as it wasn’t the traditional ending that provides a clear answer to the idea trying to be conveyed. One question I had while reading was, will technology eventually control humanity, in other words will humanity cease to exist within thirty years from now? While reading this book I recognised that the authors included potential ways as to how we are being influenced by technology so greatly now, but never provided a clear answer as to if technology will eventually take over humanity. Some points talk about humanity changing in the future while other points talk about technology taking over in the future which creates room for opinion rather than a straight answer which created a sense of uncertainty and vagueness. Question:
Will humanity eventually normalize addiction to technology?
Question:
Is technology taking over the word?
Question:
How will the next generation be influenced by technology?
I also thought the book was going to be something about earthquakes. I agree with what you said about how the book was not smooth in its transition and jumped from topic to topic, and how the book left us wondering without answering any questions, just bringing up questions for discussion.
